Presenting an Award minutes Present an award with dignity and grace. Acknowledge the contributions of the recipient. Accepting an Award minutes Accept an award with dignity, grace and sincerity.

Acknowledge the presenting organization. Recognize the characteristics of a toast. Prepare a speech praising or honoring someone, either living or dead. Poke fun at a particular individual in a good-natured way. If possible, make eye contact with the recipients as the toast is finished. Optionally, touch the rim of the glass of the person beside you. Some touch rims, a second time, with the person on the other side as well. Take a sip from your glass. Note: The guests should do likewise, but the recipients do not drink at this time.

Give the recipients a chance to acknowledge the toast. Note: The recipients may rise and briefly thank everyone, if a formal occasion or with a large group and may remain seated if with a small group. Then they take a drink themselves. Optionally, follow up with applauds for the recipients of the Toast.

This Toastmasters exercise requires the Toastmaster to give a speech praising or honoring someone, either living or dead. The term "roast" implies that heat is being applied to someone - - that someone is being "cooked" or embarrassed in some way.

Actually, a roast can be considered a positive recognition, in which an individual and his or her achievements are honored by friends. Unlike the speech of praise, the roast relies on wit, humor and satire to convey the message. Presentations of awards require grace, dignity and sincerity and are actually a speech in themselves.
