The Castle started as an idea of Ryn and Kevin Grant while they were attending college on the north shore.

They wanted a place for everyone to feel welcome to spend time hanging out and building community. After they graduated and were married, they remembered the fun times they had in their dorms, playing tabletop games with their friends. With that idea in mind started the process of making The Castle- the first board game cafe in the north shore. Board Game Cafes are exactly what they sound like, and The Castle is no different.

We are a place where you can grab a coffee, some snacks, maybe a sandwich, and then peruse our library of hundreds of board games available to play. The Castle is meant to be a place where anyone can come in for a relaxing and great time, all the while enjoying delicious food and drinks. At the very core, The Castle is a restaurant, with a full array of beer, wine and mixed drinks, a menu for lunch, dinner, and every time in between, and a huge selection of coffee, tea, latte and desserts.

Louis, MO. Stay as long as you like and play as many games as you want. Pieces is not just for dedicated gamers. We connected with the brilliant Justin Billet from Sullivan, Higdon and Sink, and an awesome professional branding presence was created. Then we went over to the Crossroads district of Kansas City, took over the industrial-esque retail space of the former location of Broadway and Penn and Keys for Kids, and got to work trying to open up Pawn and Pint.

As we continued on our quest, we encountered a few hurdles with the city of Kansas City that forced us to wait to get our liquor license, so we opened our doors sans alcohol on October 29, , with about 40 seats and games, owned by Edward Schmalz and Jonathan Steel. Over the course of the next year, we discovered that the people of Kansas City loved our idea and wanted to support us — we quickly expanded our little shop to accommodate 80 people, and throughout the winter business boomed as our events and MeetUps attracted a large following of customers and grew our memberships exponentially!

Most of all, we had a dynamic community growing in our space, full of wonderful people. Around Spring we learned of a new space which would fit our needs better, accommodate our growing community, and allow us to serve alcohol. We signed a lease and began developing the new Pawn and Pint in secret, working into the wee hours of the morning with a group of contractors who had all signed a non-disclosure agreement.

Finally, in the beginning of September, we revealed our plan to move north to the River Market. We partnered with our new neighbors at the Homesteader Cafe to provide food at our new location and were excited that we were able to not only start serving alcohol, but also have access to a full menu of delightful and delicious American comfort food.

At last, in the beginning of October , we opened our doors as a bar and finally added the Pints our name had been calling for! So from all of us at Pawn and Pint: Thank you for making this possible with your continued patronage, and we look forward to playing games with you for years to come!

Hence, a board game cafe, with seating for 65, a private room for parties, and plenty of food and drink options.

We take our coffee- and beer- seriously too. Take a look at our menu! But with The Uncommons, we wanted to push further, offering a home for tabletop games of all sorts. Check out our pictures.
